JEFFERSON — County residents with too many tires hanging around will have the chance to dispose of them free of charge in at an event in May.

The Ashtabula County Solid Waste District will host a tire amnesty event on May 15 at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds, on the west side of North Poplar Street, according to the county’s website.

Proof of residency will be required. No rims and no tires with more than 22 inch rim size will be accepted.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Four tires can be disposed of for free, and an additional six tires can be disposed of for $1 a piece, according to the county’s website.

Heidi Barringer, administrative secretary for the Ashtabula County Community Services and Planning Department, said people with more than 10 tires to dispose of should contract with a tire hauler.

For more information on the event, contact the Ashtabula County Solid Waste District at 440-576-1530.

The Ohio EPA requires anyone hauling more than 10 scrap tires at a time to be registered with the organization, according to the Ohio EPA’s website.
